A Small Town Boy
Book Design, Cover Design, Typesetting
Brief
As a personal project spanning nearly a year, this redesign reimagined a family memoir and genealogy book, expanding its original form into an 800-page keepsake meant to be read, referenced, and passed down. The challenge was to bring a lifetime of history and scattered family records into a single cohesive volume, one that honored the weight of the content while remaining genuinely readable from cover to end.
The design is built around the idea of legacy. A nostalgic photograph of the subject as a boy in his small hometown anchors the cover, setting a tone of intimacy and place before a reader opens the first page. That same sensibility carries through the interior, where careful typesetting and layout decisions balance density of information with visual breathing room, allowing decades of memory and record to feel approachable rather than overwhelming.
Through detailed layout work, custom typesetting, and a series of original vector infographics mapping the family's genealogy, a flexible system was developed to organize eight decades of material into a single narrative arc. The result is a treasured family keepsake that preserves personal history for future generations, while demonstrating the same principles of storytelling through structure, hierarchy, and visual pacing that carry across long-form editorial and publication design.
